Identity development does not unfold in one straight line. Some developmental changes depend on earlier capacities, while the lived process moves through recurring cycles of reorganisation, integration and renewed pressure. Different capacities may also develop in different orders for different people. This article explores how identity development can be sequential in its dependencies, cyclical in its process, nonlinear in its lived unfolding, and cumulative only when change is retained rather than repeatedly lost between cycles over time and across contexts.

An identity crisis is not always a crisis of self-concept. Sometimes it is existential questioning, burnout, grief, trauma activation or a life transition disturbing familiar roles. But sometimes something deeper is happening: the old organising principles no longer hold, and identity itself becomes available for examination. This article explores the difference between identity crisis and identity reorganisation, including threshold events, dissolution, healing, regulation, access cycles and movement into developmental reorganisation, without reducing the process to quick answers or fixed solutions.
